Why add our blog to the multitude already in existence? Julie and Marie are dedicated to growing as artists and creating excellent art. Like others who are self-employed, artists often work alone. It’s easy to get sidetracked by household duties, other responsibilities and activities, and whatever moods come across us. A blog in which we set up creative challenges keeps us accountable to each other and those who participate in our blog, creates an opportunity for an online artist community to form in which we can encourage and help each other, and gives our art visibility beyond our geographical community. We hope we inspire you, you inspire us, and we all grow and prosper as artists.
As a figure and portrait painter, my work has been influenced by Andrew Wyeth, Charles Reid, Dean Mitchell, Ted Nuttall, and Lenox Wallace. I have been fortunate to study under the latter two. I work almost exclusively in watercolor, emphasizing line, form and color. There is nothing more magical and mysterious than putting pigment and water onto paper and watching it combine into a glowing, translucent being of its own. My work can be seen at Hammer Boutique in La Grange, IL, The Old Town Art Studio in Western Springs, IL, private collections throughout the United States and on my website: http://web.me.com/mariemurrell.
As an artist, I visualize the colors and composition of every day life around me. I enjoy painting the outdoors- landscapes and vegetation. I continue to paint with other artists and take classes to further develop my skills and gain insight to my work through the critiquing process. I have studied under Gary Wick in pastels, Jacque France and Laureen Dunne in oils at the La Grange Art League. Lenox Wallace and Peggy Taylor have taught and influenced my work in watercolor. I mostly paint in a studio from photographs or still lifes, but I also enjoy painting outdoors. My paintings can be found in private collections in Illinois, Texas, California and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. My work is also on display at the La Grange Art League, Hammer Boutique in La Grange, IL and Fixe Self Center Boutique in Hinsdale, IL. A comprehensive exhibit of my work is available on my website at www.julieskoda.com. I am a member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, an associate member of The Pastel Society of America, the Chicago Artist’s Coalition, the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild and the LaGrange Art League.
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Baylor University, I worked in commercial design and publishing. While raising our three children I switched to working as a freelance artist for more flexibility. Art has always been a part of my life and am lucky to be able to spend more time painting and fortunate to be surrounded by a great community of artist friends.
